„Brentel 2.0 x 2
– Rationalization in Green"
2003
(2 x 30 x 40cm, oil on canvas)

The more modern thought became rationalized, the more rationalist became painting. Its evolution lead from meticulously precise genre pictures to monochrome colour planes – with less work to do and more money to earn. Since then, all historical painting is considered to be obsolete, while in a lot of cases modern pictures have to be justified when they are compared with the usual works of house-painters.

An exception to this rule is this update of “Paradise” by Friedrich Brentel (ca. 1580–1651). Because the market value of pertinent monochrome pictures is based on the sublimation of previous art styles and art theories, the idea suggested itself to illustrate this very span between the extremes of painting with the help of a colour plane framed by its own tradition – in this case by the representation of a proverbial green space within a proverbial green space, maybe even a meta-green. For green is not only hope.
